The all-new Mercedes-Benz A-Class trades clever innovation for fashionable conformism, but can the wider and lower hatch cut the mustard, then slather it over its German rivals?
With the all-new Audi A3 Sportback and still-fresh BMW 1 Series tempting premium hatch shoppers, Stuttgart has been behind the game in this hotly contested segment. Now, Mercedes-Benz hopes to shake up the market and capture lost ground with this re-birthed, markedly different A-Class.
CarAdvice has tested the new A-Class in the UK, ahead of its arrival in Australian showrooms in March 2013.
The Mercedes-Benz A-Class is obviously entirely new. The old A-Class, while roomy and clever, was tall and narrow, to the detriment of its styling and, by extension in this aesthetics-driven segment, popularity. Mini-MPV look, be gone.
There’s a greater focus on youthful ‘cool’ inside, too. You can choose subtle carbon-look inserts across the dash and doors, for example, and the high-set ‘floating’ 14.7cm colour screen and damped-swivelling tri-air vents – the design shared with the SLS AMG – add a level of funkiness to the otherwise conservative interior design. The expected array of Bluetooth, iPod and USB compatibility is standard.
Unfortunately, the driving position is slightly compromised, and the high door sills restrict visibility and, particularly, thanks to the three back-seat headrests, rear vision.
Impressively, however, parking sensors, a reversing camera and an auto reverse-park system will be standard across the range in Australia. Other safety equipment includes nine airbags, ABS, ESC and Collision Prevention Assist, which will automatically stop the A-Class if it detects a collision at less than 30km/h.

Mercedes Benz New A Class Entertainment Multimedia
Mercedes-Benz has now integrated the iPhone® comprehensively into the user experience of the new A-Class. Drivers will now have access to all of the key content of their iPhone®. This content can be viewed via the in-vehicle display and the device operated via the controller on the centre armrest, all of which is made possible thanks to the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone® and an app concept developed by Daimler in-house. In addition, with COMAND Online drivers can enjoy a fully integrated multimedia system, while with the Audio 5 USB (standard) and the Audio 20 CD there is a choice of two audio systems to suit every budget.

With the seamless integration of the iPhone® into the vehicle in conjunction with the new revolutionary user interface design, Mercedes-Benz is able to offer the Facebook generation a natural home on four wheels in the new A-Class. In addition to Facebook, Twitter and so on, the Drive Kit Plus for the iPhone® (expected to be available as an accessory from the fourth quarter of 2012, and as an optional extra ex-factory from the first quarter of 2013) together with Daimler's app concept, is able to bring other digital lifestyle services and content into the vehicle. The highlights include:

- Personalised internet radio by AUPEO! Personal Radio, which offers radio stations that compile an individual program for listeners and recommends similar music by genre or artists based on personal taste

- Siri voice control system (expected to be available from the first quarter of 2013)

- The advanced navigation software from Garmin, with internet-based real-time traffic information, online POI searches and 3D map display, all of which work even in combination with the entry-level multimedia system Audio 20

- A socially interactive experience involving "sharing", "posting" and the integration of music and other content from social networks including text-to-speech

- An intuitive "car finder" which automatically stores the vehicle's location.


Pedestrian navigation makes it completely easy to find your way back to the car
New here is also the contextual and location-based display of menu content under the headings "Social", "Media" and "Places". The basic logic behind this was presented by Daimler for the first time in January of this year at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas. Appearing under the heading "Social", for example, are the various friends and latest news from the social networks.

The user interface design is unique and revolutionary. Transparent symbols are illuminated in red to create three-dimensionally arranged navigation levels. Within the three-dimensional illustration provided by this menu structure, the user can move intuitively between the various functions in fluid, animated transitions. The user interface concept was designed and implemented by designers and engineers in the Mercedes-Benz research and development centre in Palo Alto, California/USA. Enlarging the display of content on the screen to an appropriate format for use in a vehicle and allowing it to be controlled through the ergonomically positioned Controller on the centre armrest makes operating the system both safe and easy.

The iPhone® is connected through an interface developed by Mercedes-Benz Accessories GmbH. This allows content to be fed directly from the graphics output of the device to the display of the vehicle. At the same time, the iPhone® is both powered and charged automatically while it is being used.

Full iPhone® integration is not only possible in conjunction with the COMAND Online multimedia system. All functions, including navigation, can also be used even with the entry-level Audio 20 system.

Overview of other multimedia systems

COMAND Online also offers internet access. Customers can either surf the web as they wish while the car is stationary or call up a Mercedes-Benz app whose particularly fast page loading and simple operation make it suitable for use while driving. Integrated apps include Google™ Local Search and Weather and the facility for downloading a route which has previously been configured on a PC using Google Maps and transmitted to the car. In addition, apps for Google™ Streetview and Google™ Panoramio are available for COMAND Online. Streetview enables locations all over the world to be seen in 360-degree perspective views and at street level. Panoramio allows access to millions of photographs which have been taken and uploaded by other uses at locations all around the globe. Streetview and Panoramio thus provide comprehensive means of studying routes and checking out sights and destinations before embarking on a journey. A new feature is the "News" app which enables news on politics, finance and technology to be called up online in the vehicle.

The high-resolution colour display has a diagonal of 17.8 cm. The basic colour scheme of the central display is silver grey. Photos can be shown on the large screen and turned over manually, as in a slide show. Where the audio equipment is concerned, too, new types of representation bring a fresh look and more convenient operation. The new Cover Flow function, for instance, sorts the title images of the music albums stored in a carousel-like form, so that the A-Class driver can easily leaf through their music collection – even if it is rather on the large side: the memory for compressed audio files (mp3, wma and aac formats) is now 10 GB in size.

Greatest convenience is afforded by the Music Search function, which enables drivers and passengers to search the hard disc, SD memory cards, USB sticks, CDs and DVDs for specific music tracks and artists. The search can be according to various criteria, for instance album, music category or composer. If a name needs to be entered, the software will also tolerate spelling mistakes. The driver is therefore able to devote their full attention to the traffic. As a further advantage, the occupants are able to search all the connected media and devices simultaneously.

The fast hard-disc navigation system of COMAND Online also has added
functions. New features include a 3D display with three-dimensional city views. Also new: routes covered can be recorded and repeated later, specific personal destinations can be imported via an SD card and four alternative routes can be displayed on the navigation map, one of them a particularly economical variation. Mercedes-Benz customers in Europe receive the current cards for their COMAND Online multimedia system free of charge for three years. Authorised Mercedes-Benz dealers upload the updates for navigation data in 39 European countries into the navigation system when the customer visits their premises.

In Europe, COMAND Online also comprises Speed Limit Assist, which receives its information for traffic sign recognition via a camera and navigation database. COMAND Online also includes the LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system for audio, telephone and navigation. The new "One Shot" input function for the navigation system is particularly convenient, whereby the place and road can be spoken directly after one another. This function is currently available in seven languages and significantly enhances ease of operation. With COMAND Online and LINGUATRONIC, music can also be conveniently searched for in the A-Class via voice control. The system first asks in which category it should conduct the search (artist, title, year). The category is selected by saying it or by saying the row number of the relevant category which appears on the screen. This is then followed by further questions about title, artist or album.

Fitted as standard is the Audio 5 USB unit. In addition to an AM/FM tuner and an audio amplifier, it features a built-in three-line display. Portable storage media can be connected via the USB and AUX connectors in the centre console. A pre-installation option for iPhone® with hands-free function is also available as an optional extra for the Audio 5 system. If the iPhone® is connected to the vehicle via a cradle then the radio is muted during telephone calls. The mobile's battery is charged via the vehicle's on-board power supply.

The Audio 20 CD system has a twin tuner, mp3-capable CD player and a USB connector in the centre console. The colour display has a diagonal of 14.7 cm. Thanks to a "cover art" function the title images of the music albums currently being played are shown if their details are stored in the audio file.

A top line in the Audio 20 CD’s menu navigation makes orientation easier and can be operated via the controller. The settings for the air conditioning are also displayed on the telematics screen (when in use), as is the fuel consumption over the past 15 minutes. The Bluetooth functions have also been extended: the mobile’s phone book can now be automatically transferred en bloc when connected, and wireless music reproduction is possible from Bluetooth-capable terminals. Plus text messages can also be displayed. As an optional extra the Audio 20 CD can be combined with a 6-disc CD changer, Media Interface, harman/kardon® sound system, Convenience Telephony in the armrest, digital radio (DAB) and the new Becker® MAP PILOT entry-level navigation solution.

The Becker® MAP PILOT makes a low-cost navigation function, which is also suitable for retrofitting, available for the Audio 20 CD radio. Its advantages over aftermarket solutions include integrated operation via the central controls, voice output via the vehicle's loudspeakers and display on the Audio 20 screen, a concealed location in the glove compartment and updating and expansion options via an internet portal.

Mercedes-Benz developed the "Logic7" surround sound system together with audio specialists harman/kardon®. Based on technology never before seen in a car, this high-end system delivers three-dimensional sound as a natural 360-degree musical experience for all passengers. The audio signals are distributed via a 450-watt multi-channel DSP amplifier connected to twelve high-performance loudspeakers. In conjunction with COMAND Online a multichannel listening experience with Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS is possible.

The Media Interface is available as an optional extra. The universal interface enables mobile audio devices such as an mp3 player or iPod® to be connected to the vehicle's telematics system. These devices are then operated via the head unit, the central control unit or the steering wheel buttons. By making use of USB 2.0, the new generation of the Media Interface provides quicker display and extended data selection.

As of now, there is no long-range, affordable, snazzy electric car available in the American market, but behind its factory doors, General Motors has rolled up it sleeves and gotten to work to put the first car featuring all these characteristics on the road by November 2010.

The Chevrolet Volt, as one reader astutely pointed out to me, has green-minded drivers everywhere buzzing. The Volt follows in the low-selling footsteps of the EV1 produced in 1996 (the failure is the subject of 2006 documentary film, Who Killed the Electric Car). But it is a smoothly re-packaged, re-furbished car that will appeal to many consumers this time around, and is one of GM’s top priorities now-with over 200 engineers and 50 designers working solely on the project.

The Volt is sleek, silver, and sporty, with 100 mph top speed and 0 to 60 acceleration in less than eight seconds. It runs entirely gas and emissions free for 40 miles on a battery, after which the battery combustion energy generator kicks in and extends the range an additional 300 miles.

While the battery combustion generator runs off gas, the car is not a hybrid. It only has one propulsion system-the generator supplies the car with electrical power. What this means is that GM is leaving the car’s design flexible, leaving breathing room for faster, better, stronger batteries in the future.

The car was slated to cost about $30,000, but GM executives have estimated the initial selling price to be around $40,000. While this is more expensive than the average car, several factors are expected to lower the price over time. For one, a tax credit of up to nearly 8,000 dollars will be available for the first customers. Also, Volt has a faster production cycle than the average car and manufacturing costs and battery size are expected to fall fast with increased production.

Not to mention, charging the battery (which takes eight hours) only costs an estimated 50-80 cents. At this price, if the car is driven entirely within a 40-mile range, about $1500 k will be saved compared to fueling a same size gas engine car. (see Chevrolet Volt website).

So how green is this car? The gas-engine is certainly a downer, but hopefully that will be eliminated with better battery technology. Another issue with the battery is they generally have a short lifetime and because they are toxic have to be disposed of properly-an involved process. Also, GM Vice Chairman Lutz thinks that by 2025 up to half of new vehicles will run off either electricity or hydrogen-about 50 million cars. (The current number of registered American vehicles is around 250 million). This would put an awful amount of strain on electric companies to produce electricity, which if it was still being generated from non-renewable sources, could cause pollution to skyrocket.

2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid

Driving the all-new 2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid is pretty much like driving the all-new gas powered 2012 Camry. Now I don’t expect you to take my word on this so, I would like to throw out a challenge. When the 2012 Toyota Camry rolls into dealerships in November, take both cars out for a test drive. But, when you slip behind the steering wheels, you can’t know which version of the car you are testing.


After you’ve driven both cars I’m willing to bet—not large sums, well, a few pennies to be exact—that unless you’re among the most perceptive of drivers, you found little if any difference in the driving experience between the two cars.


Camry has been America’s top-selling car nine out of the last 10 years, but competition is brutal with Ford, Hyundai, Kia and even Volkswagen making significant inroads with their midsize entries. As for the Camry Hybrid, it has taken a beating. Introduced in 2006 as a 2007 model, it quickly became the second best-selling hybrid behind the Prius. By the end of 2010, it dropped to fourth best selling hybrid. For the first six-months of this year, it has slipped to eighth, with the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid and Ford Fusion Hybrid the big gainers.


Toyota is confident the seventh-generation Camry will continue its streak of being the best seller. It is equally confident the 2012 Camry Hybrid will double its sales in its first year to around 50,000 to reclaim its sales ranking. Here’s why.


More Power And More MPG






The 2012 Camry Hybrid boasts the latest incarnation of Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive. The hybrid system again teams a four-cylinder engine, a small high torque electric motor and nickel-metal hydride batteries. Power continues to be directed to the front wheels through the transaxle’s continuously variable transmission.


The first half of the Camry Hybrid drivetrain is a new Atkinson-cycle version of the base Camry’s 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine. (An Atkinson-cycle engine gives up a little power output in exchange for improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.) The engine produces 156 horsepower, nine more than the 2.4-liter in the 2011 Camry Hybrid. The larger displacement and more efficient combustion boosts torque to 156 pound-feet, 16 more than the outgoing model.

The second half is a 105-kW electric motor and a revised 245-volt battery pack. The battery pack consists of 34 nickel-metal hydride modules, each of which contains six 1.2-volt cells. Although smaller in size, the battery pack stores and delivers more power.


Combined power output of the hybrid powertrain is 200 horsepower, a gain of 13 horsepower compared to the previous version. (Toyota does not publish a net hybrid torque figure, though it states the electric motor alone spins out 199 pounds-feet.)


Fuel economy for the previous generation Camry Hybrid—31 mpg city/35 highway/33 combined—was first eclipsed by the Ford Fusion Hybrid and then Hyundai’s Sonata Hybrid. But the 2012 model demonstrates Toyota’s expertise in gasoline-electric hybrid technology, delivering a 43/39 mpg EPA fuel economy rating with a combined average of 41 mpg. That’s a whopping 12 mpg increase in city driving and an impressive gain of 8 mpg for combined driving cycles, numbers that elevate the Camry Hybrid to again claim the title of most fuel-efficient midsize sedan.


So, how did the automaker produce a car with more power and more miles per gallon?


Weight is a major nemesis of fuel economy, and engineers cut around 250 pounds from the new hybrid. This includes trimming the size and weight of the battery pack.


Aerodynamics plays an important role in fuel economy and the 2012 Camry Hybrid achieves a notable 0.27 coefficient of drag (Cd) wind resistance. (The Toyota Prius registers 0.25 Cd.) To reach that number, underbody aerodynamic cladding was strategically placed and, the side-view mirrors and taillight lenses have integrated small fins that create a buffer around the car, helping the vehicle to slip through the air. This aero design trick was culled from Toyota’s Formula One days.

Under the hood, the engine features a roller-rocker type valvetrain and a variable-output oil pump that help reduce internal friction, boosting economy. Another fuel-saving strategy is a water-cooled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) system. This feature boosts fuel economy by reducing engine pumping losses. Also, accessory drive belts have been eliminated, replaced by electric driven accessories, including the air conditioning compressor, water pump and power steering pump.


Software engineers are credited for helping to increase the mpg numbers by enhancing the hybrid system’s power management; the Hybrid’s electronic sensors precisely determine what blend of gas and electric propulsion best balances power and fuel economy. And finally, Toyota says lower rolling resistance tires also help boost fuel economy.


Exterior






Like the gasoline models, the 2012 Camry Hybrid rides on an all-new platform, though wheelbase, length, width and height are carried-over dimensions. The result is a familiar looking vehicle, even though designers clad the sedan in all-new sheetmetal from bumper to bumper.


Except for those who work at a Toyota dealership, most people when they see the new car won’t say, "Wow, that’s the new Camry." And surely there will be a host of auto critics who will berate Toyota for their conservative redesign, pointing to the Hyundai Sonata with its swoopy lines and sharp creases. But their livelihood isn’t dependent on Camry sales.


Toyota says that 50 percent of new Camry buyers will be current Camry owners. With a projected 360,000 first year sales—50,000 hybrids—the automaker wisely won’t risk alienating that many loyal customers with polarizing styling.
Granted, this seventh-generation Camry’s sheetmetal clothing bears more than just a little kinship to the previous model, the styling, while not stirring or striking, is clean, handsome and safe.


The most noteworthy change is up front where a new chrome grille sweeps upward to a refreshed headlight design. Below, an expansive air inlet is flanked by trapezoidal chrome fog light recesses. The design fools the eye and gives the impression of greater width. In the rear, chrome taillight accents were discarded and replaced by a more curved design that wraps into the rear side panels and extends into the trunk.


There is little to distinguish the Camry Hybrid from the gasoline models. Small hybrid badges adorn the front fenders and trunk. The front Toyota emblem has a blue background rather than black, borrowing a design element from the Prius.


Interior

Toyota heeded remarks about the hard, cheap looking interior plastics of the previous Camry. The 2012 Camry’s cabin is nicely furnished and is now on par with competitors. Soft-touch plastic on the upper dash is given an upscale appearance with genuine cloth stitching. Soft textures are also used on the upper door trim, door and center console armrests as well as kneepads on either side of the console.

Exclusive interior design touches differentiate the 2012 Camry Hybrid from other Camry models. The Hybrid’s "metallic-tech grain" trim is a combination of a black dashboard with brushed-aluminum highlights and light gray or ivory seat fabrics. Unique to the Hybrid is a three-gauge instrument cluster with an analog fuel economy gauge plus, a power-flow display graphically shows energy flow, cruising range and real-time fuel economy.


Seating is all-day comfortable, and not just in the front row. Camry seats are kind to the gluteal portions of the anatomy, important in a car with a fuel range of 650-plus miles. Designers reshaped interior components to make it more spacious, with big gains in rear seat leg and hip room.


There’s also more trunk space. The trunk mounted battery pack was reduced in size and the DC-to-DC converter was moved from the trunk area to under the hood. That increased cargo room to 13.1 cubic feet, a 2.5 cubic feet gain. For long items, the right rear seatback folds forward.


On The Road


Toyota’s press introduction was held on the eastern slopes of Washington state’s Cascade Mountains, about three miles from the tiny town of Rosyln, the setting for the somewhat outré 1990’s TV series, Northern Exposure. There were several drive routes offered that included some marvelous two-lane black top roads that encouraged back road two-stepping, nearby Interstate 5 and a drive through the small town of Cle Elum.


The 2012 Camry Hybrid feels more like V-6 power than inline four. Toyota says the scoot from 0 to 60 mph is 7.6 seconds—halfway between the gas V-6’s time of 6.8 seconds and the four cylinder’s 8.6 seconds. Throttle response is near perfect; ideal for highway on-ramps as I found out when an 18-wheeler was motivating faster than I first thought. At the same time, the car is smooth as silk in low speed conditions.



2012 Toyota Camry Hybrid


Transition from gas engine to electric motor and back again is no longer "almost seamless," it is seamless—no shuddering, no shimmying; none, nada. As for the quirky, almost brick-like feel of the regenerative brake system of the previous Hybrid, it doesn’t exist anymore. Brake pedal feel is equal to gas-powered Camrys and very linear.


In terms of handling, the Camry is more than competent and is devoid of vices and totally predictable. It corners well and the electric power steering has good on-center feel and offers decent driver feedback.


But Camry’s are best known for their ride quality. A more rigid body structure and tweaks to the all-independent suspension provide a smooth and compliant feel that makes it ideal for long trips and daily commuting.


Cabin noise intrusion plays a role in perceived ride quality. Toyota has made wind noise almost nonexistent in the Hybrid with stronger door and rocker area seals; optimized placement of sound insulating materials; foam the roof, pillars and door openings; and acoustic glass used for the windshield.


All this adds up to a controlled, balanced and comfortable four-door family sedan.
And then there’s fuel economy, what the Camry Hybrid is really all about. I drove three stints on a route that was a near duplicate of my wife’s daily 15 mile commute—a tad over two miles on the freeway and the balance on city and rural roads with speed limits of 25 to 40 mph. In the 2011 Hybrid, the instrument panel readout was 44.5 mpg, the 2012 Hybrid LE model yielded 49.7 mpg.


My third trip was in the Hybrid XLE model, yes there are two Hybrid versions for 2012 (see below). By employing the Eco mode, which maximizes fuel economy across all driving conditions, and the new EV mode that keeps the vehicle in electric drive only up to 25 mph, the readout was 58.5 mpg. A longer 54-mile drive in the XLE that included a little over 40 miles on the Interstate registered 48.2 mpg.


All of these fuel economy numbers far exceed the EPA estimates, and for a couple of reasons. First, I’m quite sure I was more judicious in managing fuel economy than the EPA’s protocols. Second, the EPA does not factor the Eco and EV modes in their fuel economy estimates. Or, as the EPA says, “Your fuel economy may vary.”


More Car For Less Money






For the first time, the Camry Hybrid will be offered in trim levels, LE and XLE. The Camry Hybrid LE has a sticker price of $25,900, that’s $1,150 less than the outgoing model. And, this is no stripper model. Standard features include: keyless access with push-button start; power windows, locks and outside mirrors; cruise control; dual-zone automatic climate control, tilt/telescoping steering-wheel; and an audio system with Bluetooth and USB/iPod connectivity.


Step-up to the XLE and the base price of $27,400 is a decrease of $800 compared to last year’s model with upgrade package. The additional $1,500 for the XLE adds a power driver’s seat, a touch-screen stereo display and 17-inch alloy wheels.

A blind-spot warning system is an option on the XLE as is a JBL audio system, two separate navigation systems and Toyota’s Entune multimedia system. Entune includes apps like OpenTable, and Movietickets.com so you can book a restaurant or buy movie tickets, as well as iheartradio that offers different streaming radio stations from across the country.


The average age of Camry Hybrid owners is 64 and it would seem they would be more likely to own a Jitterbug cell phone than a smart phone, which is required for Entune. For the hip baby boomers, the apps are free but the smart phone data time will cost you.


Completing the Camry Hybrid’s resume are all the biggies when it comes to standard safety systems. For active safety, Toyota’s Star Safety System integrates stability control, anti-lock disc braking system and traction control. Passive safety features 10 passenger airbags that include, in addition to head-protecting curtain side airbags, driver and passenger front knee airbags and torso-protecting rear-seat-mounted outboard-side airbags.


The Competition



Comparing the Camry Hybrid with the Ford Fusion Hybrid and Hyundai Sonata Hybrid reveals the competition between the three is fierce. The Camry’s base price is $25,900, the Sonata stickers for $25,795 and the Fusion is priced at $28,600. But at the pump, the Camry is the clear winner, besting the Sonata’s city fuel economy by 8 mpg and the Fusion by 2 mpg.


New hybrid car buyers with no attachments to a brand will have to spend some time to determine which of the above three is right for them. For Toyota devotees, however, it is pretty much a no brainer: The 2012 Camry Hybrid offers plenty of power, an excellent interior, loads of features, enough room for five adult and then there’s that fuel economy.


The 2012 Camry will most likely again be the top selling car in the U.S. But when the numbers are tallied, don’t be surprised if the Camry Hybrid racks up a total way beyond the 50,000 the automaker is projecting.
